Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas

I am so excited to share these Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas with all of you! I love making food from scratch and these flour tortillas are surprisingly very simple with ingredients you already have!

Many of you loved my Homemade Pizza Dough recipe so I figured I would keep working on scratch made recipes. These Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas are so simple, soft, and perfect for all of your favorite Mexican dishes!

Why make homemade Flour Tortillas?

Every local grocery store today has an aisle full of different tortillas. However, it is easy to make a homemade version of this household staple. Yes of course it is easier and pretty cheap to buy flour tortillas at the store, but if you are like me and like to know what is in your food, you may want to start making these at home! No preservatives, nothing artificial, and really just FIVE ingredients! I had no idea how easy it was to make and will make these more often!

What you need to make flour tortillas at home

  • Flour
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Vegetable Shortening
  • Water
  • Tortilla Press (or rolling pin)

YES! That is it. Simple ingredients, I love it.

Homemade Flour Tortillas with Uno Casa Tortilla Press

Below I walk you step by step to so you can make flour tortillas at home. These tortillas are great to make my Green Chile Beef Enchiladas, Instant Pot Shredded Beef Tacos, or just a tasty treat for your family to enjoy. These make about 10 fajita sized flour tortillas.

How to make Homemade Flour Tortillas

First start by adding all of your dry ingredients to a mixing bowl. Whisk until well combined. Then add in the vegetable shortening.

Use a fork or pastry cutter to cut in the shortening to the mix. Once the shortening is mixed in, slowly add the warm water in. Then start using your hands to knead the dough. You can absolutely use your mixer if you want but I did this quickly and easily with my hands.

Then either cut or separate the dough into 8-10 sections and form into dough balls. Place all of them back in the bowl and cover with a towel and set aside for 10 minutes.

How to form tortillas

Next prepare a surface to roll out the dough balls into tortillas. You can use a rolling pin but I have a Tortilla Press from Uno Casa that is made from cast iron that was super easy to press the dough balls into perfectly round flat tortillas. I didn’t even have to apply pressure the weight of the cast iron did all of the work!

The tortillas press was so easy to use. All you have to do with the press is put a piece or parchment paper down (which was included with the press). Then lay one of the dough balls then another piece of parchment paper down on top and press the handle down.

Then repeat until you have formed all of the tortillas. Since I used parchment paper, there really wasn’t any clean up with the tortilla press either. Just a little residue from the vegetable shortening which wiped right up with warm water.

If using a rolling pin, place the rolling pin in the center of the dough ball and roll in an upwards motion followed by a downwards motion. Repeating as necessary until the dough ball becomes a thin round disc.

And when you are ready to eat, heat up a cast iron skillet on medium heat. Cast Iron is preferred as it conducts heat evenly and will result in a more evenly cooked tortilla. You do not want the pan to be too hot because it can quickly burn your tortillas. So just turn the dial to just before medium and you should be good to go.

How to cook Homemade Flour Tortillas

Take the disc and place it on the hot skillet. No additional oil is needed. The shortening in the mixture will keep the tortilla from sticking. Much like a pancake, the cooking process will vary, but likely only take a minute or less to brown one side of the tortilla. Then, using a spatula, flip the tortilla and brown the other side.

When ready to Serve

Place cooked tortillas in a towel or tortilla warmer, so they stay warm until they are ready to be served. These tortillas are perfect for tacos, fajitas, or as a side to your favorite dishes.

Extra tortillas can be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored for in the refrigerator for future use. Re-warm in skillet or microwave when ready to use.

Equipment

  • cast iron skillet
  • Tortilla Press or Rolling Pin

Materials

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • 4 tbsp. vegetable shortening
  • ½ cup warm water

Instructions

  • Mix dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, and salt) in a large bowl.
  • Add in vegetable shortening and use 2 forks (or a pastry cutter) to cut in the shortening until well combined.
  • Next, slowly add warm water to the mixture until your dough is soft. It should not be sticky to the touch; add flour as needed to get the correct consistency.
  • After all ingredients are added to the bowl, knead the dough for approximately 5 minutes using your hands (or dough hook/mixer).
  • Once the dough is kneaded, make 8-10 small dough balls from the mixture. Set back in bowl, cover with a towel. Let rest for 10 minutes.
  • While the dough balls are resting, prepare an area to form tortillas. If using a tortilla press, place parchment paper down, then dough ball, then another piece of paper, close and press down on the handle. If using a rolling pin, place dough ball of floured surface and leave enough room to maneuver rolling pin.
  • Heat up a cast-iron skillet to medium to medium-high heat.
  • Take the disc and place it on the hot skillet for a few minutes to brown one side of the tortilla. Then, using a spatula, flip the tortilla and brown the other side.

Notes

***Floured wax paper works well, or a flat large plastic cutting board can be floured and used to roll out the dough. Be sure you will have enough room to maneuver the rolling pin. Generously apply additional flour if needed so that dough does not stick to the rolling pin. Place the rolling pin in the center of the dough ball and roll in an upwards motion followed by a downwards motion. Repeating as necessary until the dough ball becomes a thin round disc.
