This graveyard cake is similar to any original Graveyard Halloween cake, but is much faster and easier to assemble, and is significantly less expensive. This Simple Graveyard Bumpy Cake has all of the main spooky fun elements, but is made in a faster and simpler way. This is the first time I have made one of these and had a blast doing it!
I didn’t have anything on the blog for Halloween recipes except for my Halloween Cupcakes, so wanted to try something different this year. This Simple Graveyard Bumpy Cake was super fun and my toddler had fun helping me decorate it, too! So, if you have kids grab them to help you! If not, take your time and bake up something fun this Fall!
What is a Bumpy Cake you may ask???
Well, we are from Michigan and here we have a chocolate place called Sanders that started in Detroit in 1975 that is known for it’s Bumpy Cakes. Which is basically chocolate cake with rows of buttercream frosting then covered with a chocolate ganache frosting. I put a “bumpy cake” spin on this cake by doing the same! And let me tell you- worth every extra calorie!! 🙂 I used canned frosting to make it easy but you can definitely check out my How to Make Chocolate Ganache post to walk you step by step to make if from scratch.
How to make an easy Halloween Graveyard Cake?
In the original Halloween Graveyard Cake, the cookies and pretzels are dipped in almond bark, which seals out the cake moisture and keeps them crunchy. In this case, the cookies are not dipped in a coating at all, so they become soft within a few hours. I also used cake mix and canned frosting, and didn’t do the pretzel fencing you often see. I didn’t cut any “graves” out of the cake either.
Other time-savers include skipping the green frosting grass and skipping the York Peppermint Pattie dipped in melted white almond bark. Other quick embellishments may be added to compensate, such as gummy worms and gummy eyeballs, or even a small rubber snake.
How to make this Simple Graveyard Bumpy Cake?
Grab these simple items from the grocery store (or get them delivered you you from Amazon)
- Chocolate cake mix
- Chocolate Frosting & Butter Cream Frosting
- Keebler‘s Vienna Fingers
- Chocolate Oreo’s (I didn’t know these existed)
- Pumpkin Candies & Gummy Worms
First, make the chocolate cake according to package instructions in a 9×13 baking dish. I added a little coffee to the cake mix for extra flavor and moisture. You can always add an ec=extra egg or pudding mix ,too. My cake was done cooking at 25 minutes so just keep an eye. Let the cake cool before flipping out onto pan or display board. Or to keep it super simple, leave it right in your baking dish!
Once the cake is cooled, get all your decorating stuff out. I just used a Ziploc bag and cut a tiny hole in the corner. But if you are using piping bags and different tips, go for it. (like I said GOING FOR EASY here). In one bag, fill it with the can of buttercream frosting and pipe in large rows over cake.
Then microwave the dark chocolate frosting for about 25 seconds and give it a stir. Pour over cake going with the rows of buttercream trying to cover all the frosting. Then crush some of the chocolate Oreo’s on top to make it look like “dirt”.
Using the reserved chocolate frosting, fill a small baggie and cut a tiny end off and pipe on “R.I.P.” , dates, fake names, etc. on to the cookies. I just did them all the same.
Then push the cookie down into the buttercream rows until they stay. Add pumpkins, gummy worms, and any other decorations you would like! Display it and enjoy it!

Simple Graveyard Bumpy Cake
Ingredients
- 1 box chocolate cake mix may be any other flavor that can look like dirt
- 3 eggs
- water according to box
- vegetable oil according to box
- 1/4 cup coffee optional
- 1 16 oz. can of chocolate frosting reserving 3 Tbsp for writing on gravestones
- 1 16 oz. can of buttercream frosting
- 10 Chocolate Oreo's or similar
- 12 Vienna Finger Cookies or similar
- Candy Pumpkins & Gummy Worms
Instructions
- Bake cake according to directions for 9” x 13” cake. Cool 10 minutes in the pan, then turn out onto the surface where the cake will be decorated and displayed. Let cool completely.
- Fill piping bag or plastic bag bag and cut a a corner out and Pipe buttercream in large rows.
- Then microwave the chocolate frosting for about 25 seconds, reserving a small amount of frosting to use later to write on the gravestones. Stir and pour over entire cake.
- Crush Oreo's and sprinkle over chocolate frosting layer.
- Then fill a small bag with the reserved chocolate frosting and cut a tiny hole (or if using a writing tip) and decorate Vienna cookies with "R.I.P" etc.
- Push decorated cookies down into the buttercream rows.
- Add candy pumpkins, gummy worms, and any additional decorations.
- Be proud, display, and serve!
