Why I love this Bourbon Mule Recipe

To be honest, this idea is not my own. BUT I loved it so much much and searched around and didn’t see it on the internet anywhere so I figured I’d share it with you. When I attended the Frankenmuth Culinary Creations Fest back in June, my friend and I were given a Strawberry Lemonade Mule. I kept thinking that my tongue still had the bourbon taste from sampling bourbon. My friend pointed out that she thought the cocktail was made with bourbon.

Well, I don’t care too much for the taste of bourbon except in a good Old Fashioned. But this Moscow mule with bourbon is so smooth, refreshing, and tasty! The mixers are balanced just enough, not too sweet, and not too strong tasting either! I made it for a camping trip last week, and everyone loved it so I knew I had to get it up on the site….so CHEERS!

What is a Kentucky Mule

A Kentucky Mule is a refreshing cocktail made with bourbon, ginger beer, and lime juice. It is a variation of the classic Moscow Mule, which uses vodka instead of bourbon. In this recipe- I am skipping the lime juice because you already get the tartness from the strawberry lemonade.

The combination of the spicy kick from the ginger beer, the rich flavor of bourbon, and the sweetness of the lemonade makes for a perfectly balanced cocktail that is perfect for sipping on a hot summer day.

Kentucky Mule Ingredients

  • Bourbon– I just steal something from my husband’s bourbon stash to make this- he usually hands me his less fancy ones such as Old Forester or Buffalo Trace since it is being mixed- but check out notes below.
  • Strawberry Lemonade– I love the Minute Made Zero Sugar Strawberry Lemonade or any other real lemonade from the refrigerated section.
  • Ginger Beer-Whichever brand you like works. Regular or diet.
  • Lemon or Lime (optional)- You can squeeze a wedge of lemon (or lime) in but it’s not necessary. The strawberry lemonade is tart enough.

Best Bourbon for a Kentucky Mule

When selecting a bourbon for your Strawberry Lemonade Kentucky Mule, there are a few key factors to consider. First and foremost, you’ll want to choose a high-quality bourbon that is smooth and balanced in flavor. We like to look for bourbons that have notes of caramel, vanilla, oak, and spice, as these flavors will pair well with the ginger beer in your cocktail. But to be honest, since you are mixing it- a cheaper bourbon will do just fine.
