Smash Burgers on Texas Toast

If you have been wanting to try some Blackstone smash burgers that have become a popular trend in the world of grilling and outdoor cooking, than you need to try my BBQ Texas Toast Smash Burgers! These flavorful burgers are known to have a crispy outside, they are juicy in the middle, and cooked to perfection on the griddle.

We make Blackstone burgers at least a couple times a month. Of course you can customize them to your liking but this is one of my favorite smash burger recipes. I add BBQ sauce and egg to the burger patties for awesome flavor and top them with some homemade bacon. Served up on Texas Toast? Yes! One of my favorites especially once they are toasted to perfection right along side the burger balls as they are cooking.

What is a Smash Burger?

I don’t know who ever created this concept but a smash burger is pretty much the closest burger you can get to a bar burger. Juicy, flavorful, greasy… First you start with a ball of ground beef (or meat mixture of choice) and “smashing” them on to the hot gridle surface. They cook pretty quickly and evenly resulting in killer burger every time (even if you are just starting to cook on your Backstone).

What I love about these BBQ Texas Toast Burgers

These make the perfect smash burger because:

  1. Impressive– These Texas Toast burgers are easy enough for a weeknight dinner but also impressive enough to serve to friends
  2. Large Batch– This makes a large batch because we like to have them for lunch for a few days so If you just want 4 burgers just cut the recipe in half.
  3. Perfectly Sized Patties – Each burger ball is smashed thin, so you can either make several smaller burgers instead of one large one – perfect for hosting BBQs or feeding hungry family memebers.
  4. Endless Toppings- You can use cheese of your choice, here I choose cheddar because I feel that it compliments the BBQ flavors well. You can spice it up with some jalapenos, too!

How to make these BBQ Texas Toast Blackstone Smash Burgers

First cook the bacon up if you are using bacon. While that is cooking prepare the burger mixture.

Combine the ground beef, eggs, Burger rub, eggs, and bbq sauce into a bowl. Use your hands to mix all of the ingredients until well combined. Instead of making them into burger patties, you are making them into burger balls.

So go ahead and form them into balls of desired size. I wanted larger burgers since we put them on Texas Toast. So I made 8 burgers out of 2 pounds of meat. So if you want to make them smaller or sliders- go for it. Then i sprinkled a bit more rub on each meat ball.

Once the bacon is cooked to your liking, pull it off and continue to the next steps.

How to make smash burgers

Add a little butter to the hot surface. Or if the bacon grease is still on there, that works fine too! Add on the onions and let cook for a few minutes. Then add the burger balls on top of the sliced onions. Then use a burger press or the bottom of your spatula to press the meat down. (You can use parchment paper or spray the spatula with griddle non stick spray to make it easier). Once cooked a bit, then flip them all over.

On the other side of the griddle add some butter and the slices of Texas Toast or the buttered bread/buns.

Add on the cheddar cheese and cooked bacon. Once the burgers are cooked to your liking, and the burgers to the toast and pull them off of the griddle.

I like to add a little more BBQ Sauce on top before serving. Then serve hot and enjoy.
