During the Fall Mike and I like to bust out our smoker. One thing that we love to smoke is a ham! So we wanted to share this Root Beer & Honey Smoked Ham recipe and how to smoke a ham with you.
You can use a spiral sliced ham but I grabbed a Ham Shank Portion because that’s all there was so either way- ham is easy because it is already cooked you just need to heat it up! Smoked ham is great because is will have some char and then the nice smoky flavor that we love. The addition of the root beer injection and honey/brown sugar mixture will give it a little sweetness and makes the meat nice and juicy!

If you do not have a smoker you can make this in the oven by baking according to package and still adding the ingredients in this recipe. Or on the BBQ too by adding wood chips.
This smoked ham recipe is simple and customizable. Great for a lazy Sunday, to feed a crows, or for the holidays.
How to Smoke a Ham on a smoker
First, start by prepping your smoker. For this smoked ham recipe we used a charcoal/wood smoker so start the charcoal, and wood, and add it to the smoker and heat it up to 225 degrees F. I did the prep on the ham while he was doing that.
If you have a pellet smoker- than go ahead and get your favorite pellets loaded and heat the smoker up to 225 degrees as well.
For the Root Beer & Honey Injection
Then prep the ham by injecting with root beer and seasonings of choice using an injector (see below) . I used a random group of flavors we had in our cupboard but you can use your favorite pork rub as well.
Then transfer the ham out to the smoker place it directly on the grates and begin the smoking process.
About an hour later open the lid and add the rest of the root beer and seasonings to the ham.
After about 3.5 hours we transferred the ham to foil and added honey and brown sugar then wrapped it up and set it back in the smoker to make a nice caramelization over the ham.
Let smoke for another hour. Remove, let rest a few minutes, carve and serve!
